The collection of varities of gandhiyan thoughts are been portrayed as paintings in this museum. The Handicrafts and the articals used by Gandhi are been preserved here.
During 1921, sep 21st Gandhiji visited Madurai and stayed in the residence of Sri Ramji Kalyanji. He was very much disturbed at the sight of poor peasants shivering, with nothing more than a piece of loin cloth shielding them from the cold. So overnight he took a decision that he should be a model to everyone and to dress up in a simple manner like the peasants and poor people he witnessed in his journey to Madurai and he carried out this from the very next day itself.
The next morning all were shocked to see him in his new pattern of dress and Gandhiji told them about his decision. What is more surprising is the fact that he continued to sport this new attire through out his life. He then attended a meeting in Madurai (At the place now called as Gandhi Pottal), explaining the reason for this change. Madurai thus stands as the starting place for his new mode of dress. As a proof for it even today, a plaque commemorating this landmark decision is a part of the Madurai Railway Station.
