The Mullaperiyar Dam or Mullaiperiyar Dam is a masonry gravity dam on the Periyar River in the Indian state of Kerala.

About:

The Mullaperiyar dam was built in 1895 in Kerala on the River Mullayar and its tributary, the Periyar. The water is diverted eastwards to service farmers in Tamil Nadu. Kerala has repeatedly expressed its opposition to the fact that all benefits from the dam accrue to Tamil Nadu. But its over-whelming concern is about whether the dam is safe.

The Mullaperiyar dam is a popular spot for speed boating. Go here to feel the thrill of speed and the wind rustling through your hair. A great picnic spot too.

The Periyar river which flows westward of Kerala Arabian Sea was diverted eastwards to flow towards the Bay of Bengal to provide water to the arid rain shadow region of Madurai in Madras Presidency which was in dire need of a greater supply of water than the small Vaigai River could provide. The dam created the Periyar Thekkady reservoir, from which water was diverted eastwards via a tunnel to augment the small flow of the Vaigai River. The Vaigai was dammed by the Vaigai Dam to provide a source for irrigating large tracts around Madurai. Initially the dam waters were used only for the irrigation of 68,558 ha (169,411 acres)

About:

All the sacred pools in this temple are named duly after Lord Muruga. More importantly Saravana Poigai is very intimately connected with Lord Muruga. We have to pay a fee to bathe in it. Just behind the temple of Avinankudi, there are two rows of six stucco niches. Go there. Paintings of Muruga being tended by six Karthikai maidens attract us. We have to pay a fee and get in.

It is not a pool but only a deep well. It should have once been a tank. A square wall has been erected. In the south is the bathing ghats. Several steps are submerged in the water. People in the past got down through these steps and bathed. Now as that is not possible, the water is very clean. Coins have been strewn into the water. This is an old custom and persists. When people who travel by train cross the bridge of any sacred river, they throw coins into it, thinking it is a holy act.

In the south-east is the Kshatrice Chaurav madam, and in the south is a Vinayaga temple. Wherever there is a tank invariably there will be a Pilliar Koil on the bank and here where his brother Muruga happens to reside the elder brother is sure to abide. In the west side of the ghats is a tub like structure half filled with water and Deity.

Dhandapani stands in the middle. We can bathe him by our hands with the water around him. In the sanctum we can not enter and perform ablutions. But here there are no such restrictions. Here arrangements have been made to bathe separately. (Gents and Ladies) in rooms by bringing water through pumps. We bathe chanting “OM Saravana Bava”.

About:

It is very known that this temple is one of the most famous temples of Lord Murugan, and one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan. This temple is the major attraction of Palani, and when people leave to visit Palani it is because of this temple which is located in the hilltop.

palani_hill_temple

The temple can be reached by climbing around 670 steps or it can also be reached through either using a rope car or using a winch.

The idol in the temple is said to be made with nine poisonous substances which if mixed in a certain ratio turns into an eternal medicine. Another fact is that the idol is faced west rather than east (the traditional direction of the Hindu) is because of the temple reconstructed by the Cheras. Another fact is that Lord Muruga in this temple has large ears, signifying that he will listen very closely to the prayers of his worshipers.

There is no clear history of the temple, but it is believed that this temple was constructed by y Cheraman Perumal of the Chera Dynasty. The temple was later expanded between the 8th and the 13th centuries by the Cholas and Pandyas, who added new mandapams and gopurams at the site. Some of the sculptures at the temple were added by the Nayaka kings who ruled the region for a brief period.

As this is a very famous temple, it is very well crowded and cleanliness of the temple is to be less expected if you were planning to visit the temple. This place is so divine, and the morning darshan of the deity would give an inner peace to those who are stuck with worries and miseries.

Legend:

The lore goes like this,

Once Sage Narada visited Lord Shiva in Mount Kailasam, and offered him a fruit which is said to be the fruit of wisdom. Lord Shiva was accompanied with his wife and his children.

04

Like every other father, he wanted his sons to eat the fruit of wisdom. But Sage Narada warned that the power inside the fruit would be diminished if the fruit is cut into two or either shared. So Lord Shiva and his wife Shakthi decided to give the fruit to the one who circles the world first.

Lord Ganesha with his belief that his parents are the world, circled them and got the fruit of wisdom. Lord Murugan was very much disappointed when he came back after circling the world, and left Mount Kailasam and reached to the top which is now called as the Palani Malai.
